What is the Super Visa?

The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa available to parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Unlike a regular visitor visa, the Super Visa allows stays of up to 5 years per entry (extended from 2 years as of 2024) and can be valid for up to 10 years. It is the most practical option for families waiting on the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) sponsorship process or who prefer flexibility over permanent immigration.

The most distinctive requirement of the Super Visa is Canadian medical insurance: applicants must hold a minimum of $100,000 in emergency medical coverage from a Canadian insurance provider, valid for at least one year from the date of entry. The Canadian child or grandchild must also meet a minimum income threshold based on family size. Alfalah guides you through both the insurance selection and the full application to ensure you meet every requirement.

Stay Duration

The Super Visa allows stays of up to 5 years per entry, and the visa itself can be valid for up to 10 years. Extensions of stay within Canada are also available if needed.

Medical Insurance

Applicants must show proof of Canadian medical insurance covering a minimum of $100,000 in emergency medical expenses, valid for at least one year from the planned date of arrival in Canada.

Income Requirement

The sponsoring child or grandchild must meet the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) threshold for their family size, demonstrated through a recent Notice of Assessment or employment letter.

Common Reasons Super Visa Applications Are Refused

Understanding why applications are refused helps you avoid the same pitfalls. Our consultants review every detail before submission to minimize your risk.

01
Child or Grandchild Income Below LICO

The Canadian host must meet the Minimum Necessary Income threshold for their household size — failing this requirement bars the application.

02
Insurance Policy Not Meeting IRCC Standards

The mandatory Canadian travel insurance must provide a minimum of $100,000 coverage for at least one year from a Canadian insurer, with no gaps.

03
Insufficient Proof of Relationship

The parent or grandparent relationship with the Canadian host must be documented through birth certificates and, where applicable, legal name records.

04
Medical Inadmissibility

A condition identified during the required medical examination that raises admissibility concerns under Canadian immigration law.

05
Weak Ties to Home Country

Officers must be satisfied the parent or grandparent intends to return home — absence of meaningful ties (property, dependents, accounts) raises concerns.

06
Inconsistent Financial Profile

A disconnect between the declared financial situation of the host and the submitted documentation, or insufficient evidence of personal savings.
