What is a Study Permit?

A Canadian Study Permit is required by most foreign nationals who wish to pursue academic, vocational, or professional training programs of more than 6 months in Canada. To be eligible, applicants must hold a valid Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) — a school approved by a provincial or territorial government to enrol international students.

Beyond the academic opportunity, studying in Canada is a well-recognized pathway to permanent residence. Graduates from eligible Canadian programs can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP), gaining Canadian work experience that leads directly to programs like the Canadian Experience Class under Express Entry. Alfalah helps international students navigate the study permit process strategically — with an eye on both the immediate application and the longer-term immigration pathway.

DLI Requirement

You must be accepted by a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). DLI status is assigned by provincial and territorial governments. Choosing a DLI-eligible institution is the essential first step in any study permit application.

Student Direct Stream

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) offers faster processing for eligible applicants from select countries. SDS requirements include a full first-year tuition payment upfront, a GIC of CAD $20,635, and a recent language test meeting minimum scores.

PGWP & PR Pathway

Graduates from eligible Canadian programs can obtain a Post-Graduation Work Permit for up to 3 years. Canadian work experience gained on a PGWP is the primary gateway to the Canadian Experience Class and Express Entry permanent residence.

Common Reasons Study Permit Applications Are Refused

Understanding why applications are refused helps you avoid the same pitfalls. Our consultants review every detail before submission to minimize your risk.

01
Insufficient Financial Evidence

IRCC requires proof of funds to cover tuition, living expenses, and return travel for the entire duration of study — weak evidence is the top refusal cause.

02
Weak Ties to Home Country

Officers must be convinced the student will return home after completing the program. Lack of family, employment, or property ties raises significant concerns.

03
Acceptance Not from a DLI

Enrollment at an institution that is not on the Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) list disqualifies an application outright.

04
Unconvincing Study Plan

A vague study plan, poor alignment between past education and the proposed program, or unclear career objectives following graduation.

05
Prior Refusals or Misrepresentation

A history of immigration refusals in Canada or other countries, or any past misrepresentation finding, significantly impacts the assessment.

06
Insufficient Academic Background

Applicants whose academic history does not logically support the proposed level or field of study are frequently refused.

Common Questions

A Canadian Study Permit is an official document issued by IRCC that authorizes foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions in Canada.

Yes. Eligible study permit holders can work part-time during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks, subject to IRCC conditions.

A study permit is not a direct path to PR, but graduating from a Canadian institution can lead to a Post-Graduation Work Permit, which provides Canadian work experience valuable for Express Entry and other PR pathways.

A study permit is separate from a Temporary Resident Visa. Most international students need both a study permit and a TRV to study and enter Canada.

Applicants must demonstrate sufficient funds to cover tuition, living expenses, and return travel, in addition to any amounts specified by IRCC.
